Introduction

Current trends in language education focus on the teaching of foreign lan-guages with pre-specified objectives in order to improve certain language skills such as reading comprehension, listening comprehension, speaking, writing,translation, etc.Since in each case the learner is pursuing a particular purpose, the teaching‘materials should, therefore, be geared to the needs of the learners.In 1359 (1980), the Foreign Languages Committee on Curriculum Development set the improvement of reading comprehension ability of Iranian studentes as the main objective of language teaching at the universities in this country.The purpose was to enable the students to read and extract information from the pure and applied scientific materials in their major fields of study. This book is an attempt to fulfill this need.The present book, Reading Through Reading: General English for University Students, has certain unique characteristics, a brief explanation of which‘may prove helpful for more effective use of this publication.First, the content of this book is organized around reading techniques. Most scholars agree that familiarity with certain techniques such as using a dictionary, word formation, paragraph structure and organization, and graphic devices is quite important for the improvement of reading comprehension ability of the students. Therefore, this book is designed to provide students with ample apportunities in practicing such reading techniques.Second, the materials are desinged and presented in an innovative way. That is, while the students are occupied with obtaining information from the pas.sages, they are indirectly involved in the reading comprehension activity which is the main purpose of the book.Third, the presentation of vocabulary items is also different from that of traditional books. New words and key words are introduced in such a way that the students can learn the meaning of a word through different uses and fune-tions of the same word. The meaning of the words are given in contexts ranging in length from a sentence to a short paragraph. Here again, while the students Concentrate on extracting the meaning of the word from the context, they are in.directly practicing their reading comprehension skills.Fourth, grammatical points are also introduced following the same purpose That is, as the students read a few pages to obtain information on some gram.
